Nic Showalter, M.A., CAC-III

Mr. Showalter has been working in the field of mental health and substance abuse/dependence treatment since 1994, where he has developed extensive experience working with adults and adolescents. He is educated, trained, and experienced in the areas of substance abuse/addiction, trauma, mental health, and sex therapy where he is a highly skilled practitioner in the areas of evaluation, diagnosis, and counseling. Mr. Showalter is a caring, compassionate, and engaging practitioner.

Mr. Showalter began working in the field of human services as a volunteer at a teen shelter in North San Diego County soon after completing his bachelor’s degree in general studies with an emphasis in sociology and communications. His volunteer efforts uncovered a talent for engaging adolescents in treatment and services, which gave Mr. Showalter the impetus to get his Master of Arts Degree in Applied Sociology from Northern Arizona University. While in Flagstaff, Mr. Showalter taught Sociology and Social Work courses as an adjunct instructor for Dine Community College and Northern Arizona University on the Nava-Hopi Reservation. Mr. Showalter is a Certified Addiction Counselor-III (CAC-III) and is also, trained and certified, as a Trauma Therapist and Sex Therapist.

Since moving to Colorado, nineteen years ago, Mr. Showalter has worked for multiple public and private agencies such as Youth Track Inc., Youthful Offender System (YOS), Senate Bill-94 (18th Judicial District), Arapahoe County Department of Human Services, Mile High United Way, Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD) and National Institute for Change, as well as running his own private practice and consulting firm. He has worked as a therapist, caseworker, educator, consultant, supervisor, program director and administrator (Private and Public).

Mr. Showalter has had the opportunity to work with over 2,500 adults, adolescents, couples, and families. During his tenure he has developed skills through firsthand experience in the following areas; drug and alcohol assessment and treatment, mental health assessment and treatment, trauma evaluation and treatment, design and provision of services, domestic violence, physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, numerous treatment modalities: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Somatic Therapy, Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Existential, Narrative, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Brainspotting (BPS) and Mindfulness.

In addition to his formal education, Mr. Showalter has extensive experience and specialized training in the areas of substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, dual diagnosis treatment, trauma evaluation and treatment, sex therapy, conflict resolution, couples therapy, family dynamics, special interviewing and evaluation methods, child development, effective parenting, child protection, adoption, and foster care. Mr. Showalter has specialized trauma treatment training through both the Kemp Center and the University of Colorado’s CeDAR program.
